The Seven Sisters Waterfall (Norwegian: De Syv S\u00f8strene or Dei Sju Systrene, also known as Knivsfl\u00e5fossen) tumbles down the northern side of the Geirangerfjord in Stranda Municipality, in the Sunnm\u00f8re region of M\u00f8re og Romsdal county, western Norway. It lies about 6.5 kilometres west of the village of Geiranger, just below the historic Knivsfl\u00e5 farm, and forms part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because it drops straight into the fjord, there is no road to its base: the classic way to reach it is by boat from Geiranger, either on a scheduled fjord sightseeing cruise or the Geiranger\u2013Hellesylt ferry, or by kayak for the more adventurous. Geiranger itself is reached by car over the dramatic Eagle Road and Trollstigen, by ferry from Hellesylt or \u00c5lesund, or on organised tours from cities such as \u00c5lesund, Bergen, and Oslo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Makes the Seven Sisters Famous<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The waterfall takes its name from its seven distinct streams, which cascade side by side down an almost vertical cliff. It has a total height of around 410 metres, with the tallest single free fall measuring roughly 250 metres, ranking it among Norway’s higher waterfalls. Directly across the fjord stands a single waterfall known as “The Suitor” (Friaren), and local legend ties the two together: the seven unmarried sisters are said to dance playfully down the mountainside while the Suitor tries in vain to court them from the opposite bank. A more humorous later version claims the rejected Suitor took to drink, which is why his waterfall is said to resemble the shape of a bottle. Set against the deep blue water and sheer green cliffs, the Seven Sisters is one of the most photographed sights in all of Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to Visit and Practical Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is no entry fee to see the waterfall, as it is a natural feature of the fjord; the only costs are for the cruises, kayak trips, or tours that bring you close to it. The number of visible streams depends on the water level, which is fed by snowmelt and rainfall, so the falls are at their fullest and most impressive during the major thaw from May to July, and all seven sisters are not always equally distinct later in the season. The main visiting season runs from roughly May to September. Beyond the boat trips, the waterfall can also be admired from a distance at road-accessible viewpoints such as \u00d8rnesvingen on the Eagle Road and Flydalsjuvet above the village. Visitors should note that the World Heritage fjord is subject to new environmental rules, with tour operators increasingly using quiet electric and hybrid vessels, so it is worth checking current sailing options when planning a trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
