The Palace of Culture and Science (Pa\u0142ac Kultury i Nauki, or PKiN) dominates central Warsaw at 237 metres, making it the tallest building in Poland. Completed in 1955, it was constructed as a “gift” from the Soviet Union and designed by the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev in a monumental socialist-realist style with Polish decorative touches. Long a controversial reminder of the country’s communist era, the palace has nonetheless become an enduring and beloved fixture of the city skyline, even as modern glass towers rise around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What It Is Famous<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Today the palace is a multi-purpose cultural hub housing theatres, cinemas, museums, a large concert and conference hall, and academic institutions. Its main draw for visitors is the observation terrace on the 30th floor, which sits 114 metres above ground and is reached by a high-speed lift in roughly 20 seconds. The open-air terrace wraps around all four sides of the tower, giving sweeping 360-degree views over the Old Town, the Vistula River, the National Stadium and the surrounding cityscape. On summer Friday and Saturday evenings, a special “Viewing Terrace by Night” opens until around midnight for illuminated panoramas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The palace is located at Plac Defilad 1 in the very centre of the city, with the visitor entrance on the eastern side facing Marsza\u0142kowska Street. It is directly served by the Centrum and \u015awi\u0119tokrzyska metro stations (lines M1 and M2), along with numerous tram and bus lines converging on the city centre. Daytime terrace tickets generally cost around 25\u201335 PLN for adults, with reduced rates for children, students and seniors, while the night terrace is typically around 35 PLN. The terrace is usually open from 10:00 to 20:00; check the official site, as it can close in high winds or poor weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
