As Catedrais (Praia das Catedrais, the \u201cBeach of the Cathedrals\u201d) is one of the most spectacular beaches in Spain, on the Cantabrian coast of Galicia near the town of Ribadeo in the province of Lugo. Its name comes from the extraordinary rock formations that the Atlantic has sculpted from the slate cliffs \u2014 great pointed arches, flying buttresses, columns and caves that recall the nave of a vast Gothic cathedral. The catch, and the magic, is that this natural architecture can only be seen and walked among at low tide, when the sea withdraws to reveal a wide sandy floor beneath the cliffs; at high tide the beach all but disappears beneath the waves. It is a protected natural monument and one of the most photographed places on the Galician coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At low tide you can walk out onto the sand and wander beneath and through the arches, exploring the tunnels, hidden coves and rock corridors carved into the base of the cliffs, with the towering formations soaring overhead \u2014 a genuinely awe-inspiring landscape and a paradise for photographers, especially in the soft light of early morning or sunset. From the clifftop above, a walkway and viewpoints give a completely different perspective, looking down on the arches and the surf, and this upper path is accessible at any state of the tide. It is essential to check the tide tables and plan your visit around low water, ideally arriving a couple of hours before and leaving well before the sea returns, as the incoming tide can cut off parts of the beach surprisingly quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Catedrais lies on Galicia’s north coast about 10 kilometres west of Ribadeo, close to the border with Asturias, and is most easily reached by car, with a large car park by the clifftop access. There is a railway station and buses at Ribadeo, from where local transport or a taxi can bring you the short distance to the beach. Access to the sand is free, but at busy times \u2014 over the Easter period and from the beginning of July to the end of September \u2014 a free entry permit is required, booked in advance through the regional government’s official website to limit numbers; outside these dates no permit is needed. Always plan around the tides, wear shoes with grip for the wet, uneven rocks, and take care near the water, as this is an exposed Atlantic coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
