The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is the great symbol of Zaragoza and one of the most important Marian shrines in the Catholic world. Rising along the bank of the River Ebro, its long Baroque silhouette \u2014 bristling with towers and crowned by eleven domes clad in brightly coloured tiles \u2014 is unforgettable, especially reflected in the river or lit at night. The basilica stands on the spot where, according to a tradition dating back to the earliest days of Christianity, the Virgin Mary appeared to the apostle St James standing on a pillar of jasper; that very pillar, it is said, is still venerated inside, making this reputedly the first church in the world dedicated to the Virgin. The present vast building was raised mainly between 1681 and the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior is a treasure house of Spanish Baroque. At its heart is the Holy Chapel (Santa Capilla), a richly gilded shrine designed by Ventura Rodr\u00edguez that houses the small revered image of the Virgin upon her jasper pillar, worn smooth by the touch of pilgrims. Overhead, two of the vaults were painted by Zaragoza’s most famous son, Francisco de Goya \u2014 including the luminous \u201cRegina Martyrum\u201d \u2014 while other domes glow with frescoes by Francisco Bayeu and colourful tilework. Look, too, for the two unexploded shells displayed in the church, dropped during the Civil War and, according to local belief, miraculously failing to detonate. For a different perspective, a lift and stairs climb one of the towers to a viewpoint over the great Plaza del Pilar, the tiled domes and the Ebro valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The basilica dominates the vast Plaza del Pilar in the centre of Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, which lies on the high-speed AVE line roughly midway between Madrid and Barcelona, making it very easy to reach by train (around an hour and a quarter from either). From the station it is a short taxi ride or a walk into the old town. Entry to the basilica itself is free, though it is a working place of worship, so sightseeing is limited during Mass; the viewing tower and the small museum of the Pilar’s treasures (the Museo Pilarista) charge a modest admission. Allow around an hour, dress respectfully, and if you can, come in the evening when the domes and towers are floodlit above the river, or during the great Fiestas del Pilar in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
