Its strategic position places it close to some of Istanbul\u2019s most significant landmarks, including Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and the Galata Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The station not only served as a transport hub but also became a cultural and architectural landmark, symbolizing Istanbul\u2019s connection to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u5386\u53f2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sirkeci Station was constructed during the late 19th century, a period when the Ottoman Empire was actively adopting European innovations and sought stronger ties with Western states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Construction and opening:<\/strong> Built between 1888 and 1890, the station officially opened in 1890.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Demolition for tracks:<\/strong> To lay the railway lines leading to the station, part of the outer walls and even several pavilions of Topkapi Palace were demolished with the Sultan\u2019s approval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orient Express:<\/strong> Sirkeci became the eastern terminus of the legendary Orient Express, which ran from Paris to Istanbul. The station quickly became a gateway for European travelers arriving in the Ottoman capital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u5efa\u7b51\u5b66<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The station is a prime example of Orientalism in architecture, a style blending Eastern and Western motifs that gained popularity in late 19th-century Europe. Key features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Byzantine-inspired marble fa\u00e7ade with decorative details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horseshoe-shaped arches reminiscent of Islamic architecture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stained glass windows instead of plain glass, adding vibrant color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A grand entrance facing the Golden Horn Bay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, Sirkeci was considered modern for its time. It had gas heating, artificial lighting, and even an Orient Express restaurant, which became a popular meeting point for writers, journalists, and intellectuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Present Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite renovations, the station has preserved much of its original appearance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The platforms still look much as they did more than 100 years ago.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Orient Express Caf\u00e9 continues to operate (daily from 12:00 to 23:00).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small railway museum functions on site, displaying the history of Istanbul\u2019s railways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern Role<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sirkeci remains in service today, with commuter trains and regional connections heading westward. After being closed for renovations for several years, the station reopened on 26 February 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, Sirkeci is set to play a major role in Istanbul\u2019s transport network through the Marmaray project\u2014an underground rail tunnel beneath the Bosphorus that connects the European and Asian sides of the city.
