Coptic\u2013Ethiopian Monastery (Deir es-Sultan)<\/strong> is located in Jerusalem, directly behind the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, effectively standing atop its roof. Access to the monastery is free and is typically made through the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The monastery consists of a small courtyard, in the center of which lies the dome of the Church of St. Helena, part of the Holy Sepulcher complex and situated below ground level. Surrounding the courtyard are small clay cells used by Ethiopian monks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, a Crusader monastery occupied this site during the 12th and 13th centuries, leaving only a few picturesque ruins today. Ethiopian monks established themselves here in the 17th century after being displaced from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher by other religious communities. The monastery\u2019s full name is the Ethiopian Monastery of Deir es-Sultan. In 1970, tensions arose when Egyptian Coptic monks vacated the monastery for prayer, allowing Ethiopian monks to take control. Although a compromise was later reached, relations between the Coptic and Ethiopian communities remain sensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the courtyard is a small Coptic church, which provides access to a Byzantine cistern\u2014an underground water reservoir similar to the more famous Basilica Cistern in Istanbul. Architecturally, the monastery displays African influences, making it stand out from other buildings in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
