Fortress Walls and Gates of Jerusalem<\/strong> – are among the most prominent historical features of the city. The current walls were constructed between 1535 and 1538 under the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the ruler of the Ottoman Empire, replacing older fortifications. According to some accounts, the Sultan\u2019s wife, the Slav Roksolana, requested the reconstruction to protect Jerusalem\u2019s Christian holy sites. The walls are exceptionally well-preserved, having undergone only minor modifications over nearly five centuries. They stretch for over 4 kilometers, with an average height of about 12 meters and a maximum thickness reaching 5 meters. The defensive system includes approximately 35 towers, mainly concentrated along the northern wall, historically the city\u2019s most vulnerable sector. The Tower of David, a prominent citadel, is situated near the Jaffa Gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walls are complemented by eight historic gates, seven of which remain in use. The Golden Gate, sealed in 1541, is associated with Jewish and Christian eschatological traditions, as it was believed that a Messiah would enter the city through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
