It was originally constructed during the late Roman Empire, in the 4th\u20135th centuries AD, on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the god Mars. After Christianity became the dominant religion in the Roman Empire, the temple was replaced by a baptistery dedicated to John the Baptist (San Giovanni in Latin), who is the patron saint of Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baptistery acquired its modern appearance between the 11th and 12th centuries. For centuries, it served as the main site for the baptism of Florentine citizens. Notable figures such as Dante Alighieri and members of the Medici family were baptized here. Baptismal water was sourced from a spring located near the baptistery walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the building became renowned for its artistic and architectural significance. In the 15th century, the famous eastern gate, known as the \u201cGate of Paradise\u201d, was created by Lorenzo Ghiberti. This masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture gained its name from Michelangelo, who reportedly said: <em>\u201cThis gate is so beautiful that it could serve as a decoration for the gates of heaven.\u201d<\/em> Today, the original gates are preserved in the Duomo Museum, while visitors see an exact modern copy on the baptistery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u5efa\u7b51\u4e0e\u5ba4\u5185\u8bbe\u8ba1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baptistery is <strong>octagonal in plan<\/strong>, echoing typical Romanesque architecture.
