Fisherman\u2019s Bastion (Hungarian: Hal\u00e1szb\u00e1stya) is a terrace in the Buda Castle District of Budapest, Hungary, offering panoramic views of the Danube River and the Pest side of the city. The structure was built between 1895 and 1902 on the site of the old city walls, replacing a medieval fortification. It is named after the guild of fishermen who were responsible for defending this section of the city walls in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bastion consists of seven towers, symbolizing the seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century. Its design combines neo-Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, including spires, arcades, and decorative carvings. The terraces and galleries extend up to 140 meters in length and approximately 8 meters in width. The structure is primarily built from white stone and provides multiple observation points for viewing the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large square separates Fisherman\u2019s Bastion from Matthias Church, which stands adjacent to the terrace. The square contains a statue of Stephen I, the first King of Hungary, who unified the Magyar tribes. Below the Bastion, a park covers the slopes of Castle Hill, connecting the terrace to the Danube embankment via pedestrian paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors can access the Bastion on foot, by bus No. 16 from De\u00e1k Ferenc Square, or via a funicular connecting the Danube embankment to Buda Castle. An admission fee applies to the upper observation terrace; in 2024, the cost was 1200 HUF (approximately 3 euros). The site contains public facilities and small food outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fisherman\u2019s Bastion is included in the Budapest World Heritage Site, recognized by UNESCO in 1987. The terrace is particularly noted for its views of the Hungarian Parliament building, the Danube River, and the Pest skyline, and it is illuminated at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
