Cala Macarella, Menorca, Spain

A turquoise cove between limestone cliffs and pine woods on the south coast of Menorca, next to Cala Macarelleta; in summer reachable only by bus from Ciutadella or on foot.

Cala Macarella, Menorca, Spain

Cala Macarella is a scenic sandy cove located on the southern shore of the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands of Spain, near the town of Ciutadella de Menorca. Situated between limestone cliffs and backed by pine woodland, the beach is celebrated for its turquoise‑blue water and relatively preserved natural surroundings.

Location & Setting

The cove lies within a rocky coastal zone, flanked by steep cliffs and a pine forest rising behind it. Its “sister” cove, Cala Macarelleta, is just a short walk away and offers a smaller, more secluded experience. The general terrain is natural, and while some visitor infrastructure exists (bar, toilets, showers), the setting remains more rustic than heavily developed resort beaches.

Getting There

By Car

From June to September the road to Cala Macarella is closed to private cars to protect the area, and the beach can only be reached by bus or on foot. From October to May you can drive from Ciutadella: there is a free public car park about 15–20 minutes’ walk from the beach and a paid private car park closer to it.

By Bus

In summer a shuttle bus runs from Ciutadella (Via Perimetral, near Plaça dels Pins) to the beach area in about 30 minutes; a return ticket costs around €9. Book ahead in peak season, as buses fill up.

On Foot / Hiking

You can also walk to Cala Macarella from Cala Galdana along the Camí de Cavalls coastal trail in about 40–45 minutes each way.

Tips

– Arrive early if possible, especially in high season, because parking (or bus drop‑off) fills quickly.
– Wear comfortable shoes: the woodland path includes some uneven terrain.
– Bring your own shade (umbrella) or chairs: while a bar exists, sunbeds and umbrellas may not always be available for rent.
