Playa de Ses Illetes, Formentera, Spain

Playa de Ses Illetes is a renowned beach located on the northern tip of the island of Formentera in the Balearic Islands of Spain. It lies within the protected zone of the Parque Natural de Ses Salines (Eivissa y Formentera). The beach is often described as one of the most beautiful in Europe, thanks to its fine white sand, shallow turquoise waters and the small islets lying just offshore.

Location & Setting

Ses Illetes occupies much of the narrow Es Trucadors peninsula at the northern tip of Formentera. The beach faces west and is backed by dunes and the protected landscape of the natural park. The name “Illetes” refers to the small islets (such as Illa de Tramuntana, Illa Redona and Escull d’en Palla) that lie off the coast and give the spot its iconic look.

The sea here is very calm and shallow for a good way out, with a gentle slope, making it also family‑friendly.

How to Get There

By ferry + onward transport: Formentera has no airport, so most visitors arrive by ferry from Ibiza (about 30 minutes by fast ferry). From the port of La Savina, Ses Illetes is only a few kilometres away by bike, scooter, car or bus.

By car/scooter: From mid-May to the end of September, non-residents pay a fee to drive into the natural park, and the car parks have a limited number of places.

By bicycle or on foot: Because the beach is within a protected park, arriving by bike or walking is a sustainable choice and often less stressful in high season when vehicle access is limited.

Water Temperature & Swimming Conditions

The water at Ses Illetes is generally warm and inviting. Monthly averages:

  • June: around 21–26 °C
  • July to September: around 25–29 °C
  • May and October: around 18–26 °C

Because the water is shallow and calm, it’s excellent for swimming, families and snorkelling.

Facilities & Access Cost

Beach access: The beach itself has no entrance fee; you are free to use the sands and sea.

Parking/vehicle access: From mid-May to 30 September, non-residents pay to enter the park by car (€4–6 depending on the period) or motorbike (€2–4). Pedestrians, cyclists, electric vehicles and people with reduced mobility enter free, and hybrids pay half.

Amenities: You’ll find beach bars/restaurants, water‑sports rentals, and basic services (toilets/showers) though the emphasis remains on preserving the natural setting rather than high‑rise resort infrastructure.
