Castle of Óbidos, Portugal

The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in the town of Óbidos, in the Leiria District of central Portugal. Perched on a hilltop, the castle dominates the surrounding landscape and the historic town, which is known for its cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and charming gates. Óbidos is often referred to as one of Portugal’s most picturesque towns.

History

Óbidos was taken from the Moors in 1148 by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and the castle was rebuilt and enlarged over the following centuries. In 1282 King Dinis gave the town to his bride, Queen Isabel of Aragon, and for more than 500 years it remained part of the dowry of Portuguese queens, earning it the nickname “Vila das Rainhas” (The Queens’ Town).

In 1951 the restored castle became one of Portugal’s first pousadas, historic hotels in national monuments. Today Óbidos is also a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, known for its bookshops and its chocolate and Christmas festivals.

Architecture

The Castle of Óbidos is a classic example of Portuguese medieval military architecture, with its massive stone walls, battlements, and defensive towers. Key features include:

  • The Outer Walls: Enclosing the town, these walls are dotted with turrets and gateways, creating a fortified perimeter that can still be walked along in parts.
  • The Keep: The castle’s central tower, or keep, rises above the surrounding structure and offers panoramic views of the town and countryside.
  • Gates and Towers: Notable entrances such as the Porta da Vila and Porta de São Tiago feature decorative stonework and inscriptions from the medieval period.
  • Courtyards and Interiors: The interior spaces of the castle, some of which have been converted into hotel rooms, retain elements of Gothic and Renaissance design.

Opening hours:
The village and its walls are open at all times. The inside of the castle is a hotel, the Pousada Castelo Óbidos, and is generally accessible only to guests.

Admission fees:
Walking through the village and along the walls is free. The wall walk is about 1.5 km long, with many steps and no railings in most places, so it is not suitable for small children or people with a fear of heights.

How to Get There

By car:
Óbidos is about 85 kilometers north of Lisbon and can be reached via the A8 motorway. The drive takes approximately one hour, and parking is available near the town entrance.

By bus:
Express buses from Lisbon’s Campo Grande take about an hour, and there are regular buses from Caldas da Rainha and other nearby towns. The bus stop is a short walk from the town gate.
