Tamborrada, San Sebastián, Spain

San Sebastián’s 24-hour drum festival on 20 January: thousands of drummers dressed as soldiers and cooks march through the city from midnight to midnight.

Tamborrada, San Sebastián, Spain

Tamborrada is a major annual festival held in the city of San Sebastián (Donostia), located in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Celebrated on 20 January, the day honors Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron saint, and is known for its continuous drumming processions, elaborate uniforms, and lively public participation.

Tamborrada is one of the most emblematic cultural celebrations in San Sebastián. Over a 24-hour period, the entire city is filled with the rhythms of drums and barrels, performed by thousands of participants dressed in traditional costumes.

The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when townspeople waiting at the fountains drummed on their water barrels to mock the soldiers marching through the walled city. Most of the music, including the March of San Sebastián, was composed by Raimundo Sarriegui in the second half of the 19th century, and the drummers have worn Napoleonic-era uniforms since the 1880s.

Date and Duration

The festival takes place every year on 20 January, a public holiday in San Sebastián. It begins at midnight on the night of 19 to 20 January in Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitución) and lasts exactly 24 hours, until midnight at the end of the day.

Location

Tamborrada is celebrated throughout the city of San Sebastián, but the main events occur in:

  • Old Town (Parte Vieja)
  • Constitution Square, the central hub for the opening and closing ceremonies
  • Various neighborhoods, each organizing its own local drum groups and parades
  • The festival is city-wide, and drum companies march through numerous streets and plazas.

Main Activities

  • Raising of the Flag – At midnight, the mayor raises the city flag in Constitution Square while the drummers of the Gaztelubide gastronomic society, who have opened the festival since 1934, play the March of San Sebastián. This marks the official start of the festival.
  • Drum Companies (Tamborradas) – Throughout the day, dozens of drum companies composed of adults parade through the city. Performers typically wear two types of costumes:
  • Soldiers, inspired by 19th-century military uniforms
  • Barrel players dressed as cooks, and water carriers (aguadoras), recalling the townspeople at the old fountains
  • Children’s Tamborrada – Around midday, about 5,000 schoolchildren march through the city center in the Tamborrada Infantil, held since 1927 and now the largest parade of the day.

Closing Ceremony

The festival ends at midnight in a packed Constitution Square, where the tamborrada of the Unión Artesana society, the oldest in the city, plays as the flag is lowered; at the same moment, flags are lowered across the city.

Cost and Accessibility

Participation in street events and parades is completely free. All public ceremonies, including the flag-raising and flag-lowering events, are open to everyone. No tickets are required to watch any of the official outdoor festivities.
