Zoo Leipzig, founded in 1878, lies on the edge of the city centre and calls itself a “zoo of the future”: its animals live in six theme worlds whose enclosures recreate their natural habitats. It is open 365 days a year and is a short tram ride or about a 15-minute walk from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof.
Special Themed Worlds
- Gondwanaland – a giant tropical hall with a rainforest, a treetop trail and a boat ride on the Gamanil river
- Pongoland – one of the largest great ape facilities in the world, with gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans
- Africa – the Kiwara savanna with giraffes and zebras, plus rhinos, hyenas and lions
- Asia – the Ganesha Mandir elephant temple and the Tiger Taiga
- South America – animals from the rainforests and pampas of South America
- Founders’ Garden – the historic heart of the zoo, with the old aquarium building
Opening Hours
The zoo opens at 9:00 every day and closes at 19:00 from May to September, at 18:00 in spring and October and at 17:00 in winter.
