The Beltane Fire Festival takes place in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on the evening of 30 April, marking the transition from spring to summer; the next one is on Friday 30 April 2027. The event is held on Calton Hill, a prominent hill near the city center that offers views over Edinburgh. The festival is inspired by ancient Celtic traditions of Beltane, a seasonal celebration historically associated with fire rituals and fertility.
The modern festival was revived in 1988 and is organized as a large-scale performance combining theater, music, dance, and symbolic rituals. It is not a historical reenactment but rather a contemporary interpretation of ancient pagan customs. The event features a central narrative involving characters such as the May Queen and the Green Man, representing the renewal of nature and the changing seasons.
Tickets and Experience
Unlike many public festivals, entry to the Beltane Fire Festival is ticketed. In 2026 adult tickets cost £15 in advance and £20 on the night (if any were left), under-18s paid £8 in advance, and a reduced £9.99 ticket was available for people on low incomes. Tickets often sell out, so early booking is recommended. Gates open at 7:30 PM, the procession starts around 8:30–9:00 PM, and the performance continues until late evening.
The main attractions include fire performances, drumming, processions, and theatrical acts that unfold across different areas of Calton Hill. Visitors can move around the site to watch various performances, culminating in large fire displays and ritual scenes. The atmosphere is immersive and often includes performers in elaborate costumes, body paint, and symbolic characters inspired by mythology.
Calton Hill is located within walking distance of central Edinburgh, approximately 10–15 minutes from Princes Street. The area is easily accessible on foot, and no special transport is usually required, although the hill can become crowded during the event. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain and grassy slopes.
A typical visit lasts 2–3 hours, depending on how much of the performance visitors choose to watch.
