Edinburgh Castle stands on Castle Rock, the plug of an extinct volcano above the historic centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. One of the most important landmarks in the country, it has played a central role in Scottish history for nearly a thousand years as a royal residence, military fortress and prison, and today it is Scotland’s most visited paid attraction. The castle lies within the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. From its walls there are panoramic views across the city, the Royal Mile and the hills beyond.
Inside the castle complex visitors can explore several historic buildings and exhibitions. One of the highlights is the Crown Room, where the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown jewels, are displayed. The Stone of Destiny, kept here from 1996, was moved to Perth Museum in 2024. St Margaret’s Chapel, built around 1130, is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh. The Great Hall, the huge medieval cannon Mons Meg, the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum tell the story of Scotland’s royal and military past.
Visitor Information
Every day at exactly one o’clock, except on Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day, the One O’Clock Gun is fired from the castle, a tradition that began in 1861 to help ships in the Firth of Forth set their clocks. Visitors gather early to watch. In August the castle esplanade hosts the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the city is at its busiest during the Edinburgh festivals.
In 2026 an adult ticket (16–64) costs £23.50 online and £26 at the gate; concessions pay £19 or £21 and children aged 7–15 £14 or £15.50. The castle is open daily from 9:30 to 18:00 between April and September and until 17:00 from October to March, with last entry one hour before closing; it is closed on 25 and 26 December. Tickets are sold for timed slots and often sell out in summer, so book online in advance. Early morning is the best time to avoid crowds.
The castle stands at the top of the Royal Mile in the heart of the Old Town, a 10–15 minute uphill walk from Edinburgh Waverley railway station. Frequent trains link Edinburgh with Glasgow and other British cities, and trams run from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre.
