Telč old town, Czech Republic

Historic Centre of Telč is one of the finest examples of Renaissance urban planning in Central Europe. Located in the town of Telč, the historic center developed as an important trading settlement during the Middle Ages before being transformed into a Renaissance masterpiece following a devastating fire in the 16th century. Wealthy merchants rebuilt the town with elegant houses featuring colorful façades, decorative gables, and covered arcades that remain remarkably well preserved today.

The focal point of the old town is Zacharias of Hradec Square, a large triangular marketplace surrounded by rows of beautifully restored Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Each house has its own unique architectural details, creating one of the most picturesque town squares in the Czech Republic. At one end of the square stands the impressive Telč Castle, a former Gothic fortress later converted into an elegant Renaissance residence with richly decorated interiors and landscaped gardens.

Visitor Information

The historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 because of its exceptional preservation and architectural harmony. Visitors can stroll through narrow side streets, explore churches, admire historic fountains, and enjoy scenic views of the ponds that surround much of the old town. The combination of Renaissance architecture and tranquil lakes gives Telč a distinctive atmosphere unlike most other Czech towns.

Walking through the historic center is free, while guided tours of Telč Castle generally cost around CZK 250–350 for adults. Several museums, galleries, and cultural events are also available throughout the year. Spring and summer are particularly popular seasons to visit, when outdoor cafés and festivals bring additional life to the historic square.

Telč is located in the Vysočina region, roughly halfway between Prague and Brno. Travelers can reach the town by train, bus, or car, with regular regional connections from larger Czech cities. Thanks to its compact size, most attractions in Telč can easily be explored on foot, making it an ideal destination for a relaxed day trip or overnight stay.
