Bioparco di Roma is one of the oldest zoos in Europe and one of the most popular family attractions in Rome. Opened in 1911, the zoo was originally designed to showcase animals in more natural environments, a concept that was innovative for its time. Today, Bioparco covers approximately 17 hectares within the scenic Villa Borghese park and houses hundreds of animal species from around the world.
Visitors can observe a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, bears, reptiles, and exotic birds. The zoo has gradually modernized many of its habitats to improve animal welfare and create environments that resemble natural ecosystems. Educational exhibits throughout the park focus on biodiversity, endangered species, and wildlife conservation.
Visitor Information
Bioparco di Roma actively participates in international conservation and breeding programs aimed at protecting threatened species. In addition to animal exhibits, the zoo offers educational workshops, children’s activities, feeding demonstrations, and interactive displays that make it especially popular with families and school groups.
Adult admission tickets generally cost around €19, while discounted rates are available for children, students, and senior visitors. Most visitors spend three to five hours exploring the zoo, although the surrounding Villa Borghese gardens provide additional opportunities for walking, cycling, and relaxation. Visiting in the morning is often recommended, as many animals are more active during cooler hours.
The zoo is conveniently located in central Rome within Villa Borghese and can be reached easily by public transport. Nearby access points include Flaminio Metro Station and several city bus routes. Visitors arriving from Roma Termini Railway Station can reach the zoo in approximately 15–20 minutes. Its central location makes it easy to combine a visit with other nearby attractions, museums, and historic sites in Rome.
