Weltenburg Abbey (Kloster Weltenburg) enjoys one of the most spectacular settings of any monastery in Germany, standing on a low peninsula where the Danube squeezes through a narrow, cliff-lined gorge near Kelheim in Lower Bavaria. A Benedictine community was founded here around the year 620 by wandering Irish or Scottish monks, making Weltenburg the oldest monastery in Bavaria. Though dissolved during the secularisation of 1803 and re-established in 1842, the abbey remains a working religious house — and one famous for three things: its breathtaking Baroque church, its idyllic riverside location at the heart of the Danube Gorge, and a monastery brewery that claims to be the oldest of its kind in the world.
What to See
The jewel is the abbey church of St George, built between 1716 and 1739 by the celebrated Asam brothers, Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin, and counted among the masterpieces of Bavarian Baroque. Its oval interior is a theatrical explosion of gilding, marble, frescoes and swirling stucco, culminating in the high altar where a silvered figure of St George on horseback, spearing the dragon, is dramatically lit from a hidden window behind — a piece of sacred stagecraft that still astonishes. Beyond the church, the peaceful monastery courtyard opens onto a much-loved beer garden on the riverbank, where the abbey’s dark “Barock Dunkel” beer, brewed here since the Middle Ages, is served beneath the trees. From the abbey you can also walk up to the little Frauenberg chapel on the hill above for a fine view over the river bend, or set off along the footpaths through the surrounding nature reserve of the Danube Gorge.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Weltenburg sits on the Danube a few kilometres upstream of Kelheim, roughly between Regensburg and Ingolstadt. The classic and most memorable way to arrive is by boat: excursion vessels run from Kelheim through the dramatic Danube Gorge (the Donaudurchbruch), passing between towering limestone cliffs before docking right beside the abbey. It can also be reached on foot along the river or over the hills, and there is a car park a short walk away, though the immediate riverside is largely traffic-free. Visiting the church, courtyard and beer garden is free, while the boat trip through the gorge is ticketed and runs mainly from spring to autumn. It is worth timing a visit to include lunch or a beer in the courtyard, and to allow time for the short, scenic gorge cruise that is half the appeal of coming here.
