The Fête des Lumières is Lyon’s most magical event and one of the great winter festivals of Europe — four evenings each December when the whole city becomes a canvas of light. Squares, façades, churches, bridges and parks are transformed by dozens of illuminations, from monumental video projections and immersive light shows to delicate, poetic installations by artists from around the world. The festival grows out of a much older local tradition: on 8 December 1852 the people of Lyon spontaneously placed candles in their windows to honour the Virgin Mary, and the city has celebrated with light ever since. Today it draws millions of visitors and, remarkably, remains completely free. In 2026 it runs from 5 to 8 December.

What to See

Over the four nights the historic centre and riverbanks become a vast open-air gallery: expect grand projection-mapping shows on landmark façades such as the cathedral and the Place des Terreaux, glowing sculptures and light “forests” in the squares, and quieter, contemplative works tucked into courtyards and along the Rhône and Saône. Alongside the official programme, the Lyonnais keep the old custom alive by lining their windowsills with little candles (lumignons), adding a warm, human glow to the spectacle. Because installations are spread across the city, the pleasure is in wandering a signed route from one to the next, ideally over more than one evening, wrapping up warm and pausing for mulled wine and Lyon’s famous food along the way.

How to Get There and Practical Information

The festival takes place across central Lyon, in the Rhône valley of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, easily reached by high-speed TGV train (about two hours from Paris) and by air; during the event the city centre is largely pedestrianised and best explored on foot, with the metro and trams running extended hours. In 2026 the Fête des Lumières is held from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December, with installations lit from around 6 pm until midnight (until 11 pm on the final evening). Admission is free, but the city is extremely crowded, especially at the weekend, so it pays to go early in the evening or on the Monday and Tuesday, to book accommodation well ahead, and to dress for cold December nights.
