A Moorish hilltop castle above Lisbon, Portugal, with old walls and some of the best views over the city.

São Jorge Castle, Lisbon, Portugal

São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) stands on the highest hill in the centre of Lisbon, above the old Alfama district. People have lived on this hill for more than 2,000 years. The castle as we see it was first built by the Moors in the 11th century. In 1147 the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, took the city from the Moors, and later the castle became a royal palace. Today its strong walls and towers are one of the symbols of Lisbon, and the castle offers some of the finest views over the city and the river.

What to See

You can walk along the castle walls and climb its towers for views in every direction, over the red roofs of the old town, the Tagus River and the bridges. Inside one tower there is a camera obscura, a special mirror system that shows live images of the city. There is also a small museum with objects found during excavations, and an archaeological area with the remains of Moorish houses and an old palace. The gardens are shady and pleasant, with old trees and peacocks walking freely. The terrace at the entrance is one of the best places in Lisbon to watch the sunset.

How to Get There and Practical Information

The castle is in the centre of Lisbon, at the top of the Alfama and Castelo districts. You can walk up from the Baixa through steep streets, or take tram 28 or bus 737, which goes close to the entrance. There is an entrance fee, with lower prices for young people and seniors and free entry for children. The castle is open every day. The hill is steep and the paths inside are uneven, so wear comfortable shoes. Come early or late in the day to avoid the biggest crowds.
