The Košice State Theater (Štátne divadlo Košice), often referred to as the Košice Opera House, is a state theater and one of the most notable landmarks of Košice, Slovakia. It is located in the very center of the city, on Hlavná Street, near St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral.
History and Architecture
The present theater building was constructed in 1899 in the popular neo-baroque style, designed by architect Adolf Lang. It was built on the site of an earlier theater dating from 1788.
The façade is richly decorated with sculptural compositions and columns, and painted in light tones typical of the era. Sculptures depict themes from theatrical works, and the roof features a symbolic statue of Dawn holding a torch. The interior is equally ornate, with lavish stucco decoration and frescoes on the ceiling inspired by world literature and drama, including Romeo and Juliet and Othello.
Surroundings
In front of the theater lies a landscaped square with benches and the singing fountain, which is illuminated at night and synchronized with music. Behind the building stands the Plague Column. At night, the theater itself is highlighted with decorative lighting, adding to the charm of Košice’s historic center.
Performances
The theater hosts a wide repertoire, including opera, ballet, and drama. Performances are held in Slovak, making them most accessible to local audiences, though the setting and atmosphere also attract international visitors. Ticket prices are relatively affordable compared to other European theaters.
