Spišská Sobota is a historic district located approximately 1.5 kilometers northeast of central Poprad in eastern Slovakia. Originally an independent town, it is now a well-preserved area of Poprad with historical architecture, hotels, and cafes. The district is known for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere and receives relatively few tourists compared with other Slovak attractions.
History
Spišská Sobota was founded in the mid-13th century at the intersection of trade routes connecting Poland and Hungary. Over time, artisans settled in the town, establishing workshops and small businesses. The town experienced its peak during the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was fortified with defensive walls and developed economically.
In the 19th century, the construction of the railway through nearby Poprad led to the decline of Spišská Sobota as a regional center. By the mid-20th century, the town lost its independent status and was incorporated into Poprad.
Architecture and Sights
The central area, Market Square, features well-preserved 16th- and 17th-century townhouses made of wood and stone. Notable landmarks include:
- Church of St. Juraj: A 13th-century church located near the square.
- Bell Tower: Dating to the 16th century.
- City Hall: Historic administrative building in the central square.
- Marian Column: Featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The square also contains a small park and serves as the focal point of the historic district.
