Karlskirche Church, Vienna

Karlskirche (Church of St. Charles) is a baroque church in Vienna, Austria, now functioning as a museum with paid entry (€9.50 adult ticket). It was originally built as a Catholic parish church. The structure is situated between Vienna’s Ringstraße, which encircles the historic city center, and the Belvedere Palace.

The church stands on Karlsplatz, a large square with a fountain and several sculptures. Construction was commissioned by Emperor Charles VI in 1716, following an outbreak of plague, and was completed in 1737. It was dedicated to St. Carlo Borromeo, a saint associated with the protection of plague victims. The design combines several stylistic elements: the main baroque structure and dome are flanked by two Roman-style columns, and the façade features a Greek-style portico. Numerous sculptures decorate the exterior. The height of the church exceeds 70 meters, making it a prominent feature in the cityscape.

Inside, the church follows a more traditional baroque style. Visitors can access the dome by elevator. While the windows of the viewing platform limit the city panorama, the vantage point provides a close view of the frescoes on the church’s dome. The museum within the church is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
