Krakow Barbakan

Medieval fortress, one of the symbols of Krakow

Krakow Barbakan

The Krakow Barbican is one of the most recognizable symbols of Krakow. This medieval fortress once guarded the approach to the Florian Gate and remains remarkably well-preserved.

Location

The Barbican is located north of Florian Gate, just outside the old city walls, and is surrounded by the green Krakow Planty park.

Architecture

The fortress is circular, about 25 meters in diameter, with walls 3 meters thick. It is adorned with 7 pointed towers and 130 loopholes oriented in all directions. The Barbican was built around 1498–1499 as a separate defensive structure to protect northern Krakow from invaders, including the forces of Stephen the Great. Originally, it was connected to the Florian Gate by a covered passage across the moat, which no longer exists.

Current Use

While the Barbican did not play a decisive role in Krakow’s defense, it now hosts cultural events such as fencing competitions, knightly tournaments, reenactments, ballroom dancing, and temporary museum exhibitions.

Visitor Information

The Barbican is open from April to October, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an entrance fee for visitors.
