Navagio Beach, Zakynthos, Greece

Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is one of the most famous and most photographed beaches in Greece. It lies on the north-west coast of Zakynthos (Zante) in the Ionian Sea and is known for its turquoise water, towering limestone cliffs and the rusting wreck of a ship on its pale pebble shore.

Overview and Scenery

The beach sits in a secluded cove enclosed by vertical cliffs and can only be reached from the sea. Its centrepiece is the wreck of the Panagiotis, a ship suspected of smuggling cigarettes that ran aground here in 1980. Over the years the rusting hull has become a symbol of Zakynthos and one of the best-known travel images of Greece.

How to Get There

Because the cove is enclosed by cliffs, there is no road to the beach. After landslide risk assessments, the Greek authorities have banned landing and swimming at the beach until at least 31 October 2026, and boats must stay about 50 metres offshore. You can still see Navagio from the clifftop viewpoint or from a boat.

  • By boat: Cruises leave daily from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos and Zakynthos Town. While the ban is in force they pass the cove without landing, and many also stop at the Blue Caves. From Porto Vromi the ride takes about 20–30 minutes each way.
  • By car and viewpoint: Drive towards the village of Anafonitria and follow the signs to the Navagio viewpoint. A short walk leads to the cliff edge, with a breathtaking view of the bay and the wreck far below.

Many visitors do both: the panoramic view from the cliffs and a boat trip along the coast.

Water Temperature and Swimming

The water around Navagio is among the clearest in Greece, glowing in shades of turquoise and sapphire. Its temperature changes with the season:

  • From June to September the sea is around 23–28 °C.
  • In late spring and autumn it is cooler, around 18–24 °C.

Swimming in the cove is currently not allowed, and the open bay can have strong waves on windy days.

Entrance Fee and Facilities

There is no fee for the beach or the viewpoint, but a boat cruise costs roughly 15–30 euros per person, depending on the departure point and the type of boat.

There are no facilities on the beach itself: no toilets, no cafés and no shade. Bring water and sunscreen on a boat trip. Near the viewpoint you will find parking and small snack and souvenir stalls.

Safety and Accessibility

Rockfalls from the surrounding cliffs are a real risk, which is why the beach is closed to landings. In 2026 the authorities also announced a plan to widen the beach by about 30 metres with gravel to protect the wreck from the waves. Check the latest rules before you go and follow the instructions of the boat crews.

Parts of the cliff edge around the viewpoint are not fenced, so stay within the marked areas and keep away from the edge when taking photos.
