Villa d'Este, Tivoli, Italia

Villa d’Este in Tivoli, about 30 kilometres east of Rome, is one of the finest Renaissance villas in Italy. It was created from 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, governor of Tivoli, who turned a former Benedictine convent into a lavish residence, while the architect and antiquarian Pirro Ligorio designed the terraced gardens on the steep hillside below. Since 2001 the villa and its gardens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The gardens are famous for their water: around 50 fountains and hundreds of jets, pools and cascades are fed only by gravity, with water from the Aniene river. Highlights include the Hundred Fountains along a long terrace, the Oval Fountain, the Rometta, a miniature ancient Rome, the Fountain of Neptune with its fishponds, and the Fountain of the Organ, whose water-powered organ still plays music several times a day. Inside the villa, the rooms are decorated with 16th-century frescoes.

Informazioni per i visitatori

Allow two to three hours for the visit. The gardens are laid out on steep slopes with many stairs and uneven paths, so wear comfortable shoes; the upper terraces have the best views over the countryside towards Rome. Spring and early summer are especially beautiful, and the music of the Organ Fountain draws a crowd, so check its times at the entrance.

A full-price ticket costs about €15 (more during special exhibitions), plus a booking fee online; EU citizens aged 18–25 pay €2, under-18s enter free, and admission is free on the first Sunday of the month. A combined Villae ticket also covers Hadrian’s Villa below Tivoli. The villa is open daily, but the hours change through the year, so check the official Villae website before you go.

Villa d’Este is in the centre of Tivoli, on Piazza Trento. Regional trains from Roma Tiburtina reach Tivoli station in about an hour, followed by a 15-minute uphill walk, and Cotral buses run from Ponte Mammolo metro station (line B) to the town centre. Hadrian’s Villa is about 5 kilometres away, so both villas can be combined in a day trip from Rome.
