Rosenborg Castle stands in the King’s Garden (Kongens Have) at Øster Voldgade 4A in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It is exceptionally easy to reach, lying only about 200 metres from Nørreport station, which is a hub for the Metro, S-trains, regional trains, and city buses. The Round Tower is a short walk away, making the two simple to combine. There is no parking at the castle itself, so public transport is the recommended option. The surrounding King’s Garden is a free public park and a pleasant place to relax before or after a visit.

History and Highlights

The castle was built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV, one of Denmark’s most ambitious monarchs and a great patron of the arts, who used it as his favourite residence. Today it preserves around 400 years of royal history across some 24 rooms on three floors, beginning with Christian IV’s own Winter Room and culminating in the magnificent Long Hall that runs the full length of the top floor. The undisputed highlight is the Treasury in the basement, where the Danish Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia are kept under guard, including the dazzling coronation crown. Self-guided tour leaflets are available in several languages at the entrance.

Adult admission is 140 DKK, with a reduced rate of around 90 DKK for students, while visitors under 18 enter free (though they still need a ticket). The price includes both the castle interiors and the Treasury. Because the castle is small, tickets are sold in timed slots, and booking online in advance is strongly advised during the busy summer season to avoid disappointment and queues. Those visiting multiple royal sites can use the Royal Palace Pass covering Rosenborg, Amalienborg, and Christiansborg for around 345 DKK over three days, and the Copenhagen Card also grants free entry. Note that only very small bags are allowed inside, with lockers available for larger items.
