恩戈地自然保护区 is a picturesque oasis in the mountains of the Judean Desert, located on the western coast of the Dead Sea in Israel. Thanks to its natural springs, the reserve remains green throughout the year, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding desert.

The reserve is open all year round. From April to September, opening hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from October to March, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance costs 28 shekels in 2024. At the main entrance, there is parking, toilets, and a small café.

Ein Gedi stretches along the Nahal David canyon, where a stream flows through the gorge, forming numerous waterfalls and natural pools. The most famous of these is Shulamit Falls, also known as David’s Falls, which rises about 30 meters and never dries up. In addition to the David stream, the Arugot stream flows through the reserve, creating more waterfalls and natural pools ideal for cooling off in the heat.

Despite being in the desert, Ein Gedi hosts diverse flora from the African desert, the tropics, and the Mediterranean. Wildlife includes rock sheep, hyraxes, foxes, hyenas, wolves, and even leopards. While predators are rarely seen, spotting hyraxes and mountain goats is common.

Trails and Hiking

Ein Gedi has two main trails for visitors. The short tourist trail begins near the entrance and follows the stream along the right side of Nahal David canyon. The path is mostly easy, with a few small climbs, and ends at Shulamit Falls. The full loop takes about 40–50 minutes, allowing you to enjoy waterfalls, canyon views, and local wildlife.

For more adventurous visitors, the trail continues past Shulamit Falls to the Dudaym Cave, the waterfall’s source, requiring an additional 45-minute climb. The most challenging route explores the surrounding mountains, visiting ancient temple ruins, the Ein Gedi spring, and desert plateaus. This route can take about three hours and is recommended only for experienced hikers.

Water is essential when hiking in the desert, so bring plenty with you.

Getting to Ein Gedi

The easiest way to visit is with a guided tour, which typically costs between $50 and $80 per person, depending on the company and departure city. Some tours also include nearby Dead Sea spa complexes, so confirm the itinerary before booking.

It is also possible to reach Ein Gedi by public transport. Bus 421 departs once daily from the Arlozorov bus station in northern Tel Aviv at 8:40 a.m., returning at 14:27. The journey takes about two and a half hours one way, and tickets cost approximately 45 shekels. Keep in mind that missing the return bus can create significant difficulties, as transport in the area is infrequent.
