Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is one of Europe's oldest cities and one of its best-kept secrets — a laid-back, affordable and increasingly stylish Balkan capital set at the foot of the forested Vitosha Mountain. Layers of history are visible on almost every street, from Roman ruins and Ottoman mosques to golden-domed Orthodox churches and monumental Soviet-era buildings. Green, walkable and dotted with lively cafes and galleries, Sofia rewards visitors with grand sights, mountain air on its doorstep and some of the lowest prices in the European Union. Bulgarian (written in Cyrillic) is the language, and English is widely spoken among younger people and in tourist areas.

Sofia Airport (SOF) is close to the centre and linked directly by metro in around 20 minutes. The city has a clean, modern metro plus trams, trolleybuses and buses, all inexpensive, and the compact centre is easily explored on foot. Sofia is a Balkan rail and coach hub, with connections to neighbouring countries, and the ski slopes and hiking trails of Vitosha and Borovets are only a short trip away.

Sofia is among the most affordable capitals in the EU (Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026). Expect roughly 50-110 EUR per night for a mid-range hotel, with hostels from about 12 EUR. A casual meal runs around 8-16 EUR, a coffee 1.50-2.50 EUR and a local beer 2-3 EUR. Public transport tickets cost around 1.60 EUR, and most museums and churches are 3-8 EUR, with several free. The magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its gilded domes, is Sofia's symbol and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Nearby stand the tiny 4th-century St George Rotunda, the exposed Roman ruins of ancient Serdica (visible around the metro), the Sofia Synagogue and the Banya Bashi Mosque — faiths and eras side by side. Stroll the yellow-cobbled centre and pedestrian Vitosha Boulevard, ride up Vitosha Mountain for hiking or skiing, and take a day trip to the spectacular Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mountains.
