The Buda Labyrinth (Labirintus) is a network of caves and passages located beneath Buda Castle Hill in Budapest, Hungary. With origins dating back several million years, these natural caves were later expanded and interconnected by humans, creating an underground system of halls and corridors stretching approximately 1,200 meters in length and situated about 16 meters below the surface.
History and Uses
Over the centuries, the caves have served a variety of purposes. They were used as wine cellars connected directly to residential houses, as military fortifications, and during World War II as bunkers and even a military hospital. Their strategic location under Buda Castle made them an important part of the city’s infrastructure.
The Modern Labyrinth
Today, the tourist-accessible portion is known as the Buda Labyrinth (Labirintus). Entry is through the basement of Úri utca 9, where a reception desk and ticket office are located. The caves were restored between 2011 and 2013 and periodically reopen for visitors, though operations can vary. The labyrinth is not a true maze—it is looped, with only a few dead ends, making it easy to navigate. It functions primarily as an underground museum with themed installations rather than original historical artifacts. Exhibits include imaginative “archaeological” stones marked with imprints of modern objects, rooms displaying mannequins in period costumes, rock art reproductions, a so-called “hall of fear” with lighting effects, Dracula’s tomb, and other atmospheric displays.
Visitor Experience
The labyrinth is lit by green lamps reminiscent of kerosene lanterns. At 18:00, the lights are turned off, and visitors are provided with oil lamps, offering a distinctive experience. Due to the underground location, temperatures remain cool, so warm clothing is recommended.
