Every autumn, the Alpine region of Tyrol celebrates one of its most picturesque and authentic traditions: Almabtrieb, the ceremonial return of cattle from high mountain pastures (Almen) back to the valleys. This centuries-old custom marks the end of the alpine grazing season and is both a practical agricultural event and a joyful folk celebration.

When does Almabtrieb take place?

Almabtrieb usually happens from mid-September to early October, depending on weather conditions and when the cattle are brought down from the mountains. Exact dates vary by village each year, so visitors should always check the local tourism office calendar in advance.

Where to experience Almabtrieb in Tyrol

Tyrol is the heart of this tradition. Some of the best places to witness Almabtrieb include:

• Zillertal – One of the largest and most famous celebrations
• Alpbach – A postcard-perfect alpine village
• Mayrhofen – A lively event with markets and music
• Wildschönau – Known for its particularly authentic atmosphere

Among these, Wildschönau offers one of the most charming and traditional experiences. Located in a peaceful high valley in the Kitzbühel Alps, Wildschönau hosts a particularly atmospheric Almabtrieb celebration, typically held in mid-September.

The Decorated Cattle

If the summer has passed without accidents in the mountains, the cows are adorned with:

• Large handcrafted floral headdresses (Kranz or crown)
• Alpine flowers, greenery, and ribbons
• Massive bronze cowbells

The lead cow often wears the most elaborate decoration, sometimes resembling a floral crown tower.

The Procession

The highlight of the day is the ceremonial procession through the village:

• Farmers in traditional Tyrolean Tracht (dirndl and lederhosen)
• Decorated cattle walking slowly through the main street

The sound of dozens of large cowbells echoing through the valley creates a uniquely Alpine atmosphere.

Once the cattle safely reach the valley farms, the celebration continues:

• Traditional folk music and dancing
• Beer tents and Austrian specialties
• Activities for children

Compared to larger destinations like Zillertal, Wildschönau feels more intimate and authentic, with fewer tour buses and a stronger local character.
