Athens, the capital of Greece and the largest city of the Attica region, is where Western civilisation began — the birthplace of democracy, philosophy and theatre, watched over by the Acropolis for some 2,500 years. Today it is a big, lively Mediterranean metropolis where ancient ruins rise between busy modern streets, neoclassical facades and buzzing neighbourhoods full of tavernas, cafes and street art. The sea is never far, with the beaches and coastline of the Attica "Riviera" a short ride away. Greek is the language, English is common in tourist areas, and Athens rewards visitors with history, sunshine and warm hospitality.

The gateway is Athens International Airport (ATH, Eleftherios Venizelos), connected to the centre and to the port of Piraeus by metro in around 40 minutes. Athens has a clean, modern metro of three lines, plus trams and buses, and Piraeus is the launch point for ferries to the islands. The historic centre around the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki is compact and best explored on foot, with much of it pedestrianised.

Athens is moderately priced and good value for a European capital. Expect roughly 70-150 EUR per night for a mid-range hotel, with hostels from about 18 EUR. A casual taverna meal runs around 12-22 EUR, a Greek coffee or frappe 2-3 EUR and a glass of wine 3-5 EUR. A single metro ticket is around 1.20 EUR, and the Acropolis costs about 20 EUR (a combined ticket covers several ancient sites, and prices drop in winter). Prices are approximate and vary by season.

The Acropolis crowns the city, with the majestic Parthenon and the Erechtheion, and the superb modern Acropolis Museum at its foot. Below wind the ancient Agora, the Roman Forum and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, while the neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki bustle with shops, ruins and rooftop views. Watch the changing of the guard at Syntagma Square, marvel at the treasures of the National Archaeological Museum, and climb Lycabettus Hill at sunset. Day trips to Cape Sounion's cliff-top temple or to Delphi are easy additions.
