Delphi is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Greece and one of the most important religious centers of the ancient world. Built on the slopes of Mount Parnassus overlooking a dramatic mountain valley, Delphi was once considered by the ancient Greeks to be the “center of the world.” Today, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most visited historical attractions.

Main attraction

The main attraction is the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, where the famous oracle delivered prophecies in ancient times. Visitors can also explore:

• the ancient theater overlooking the valley,
• the stadium above the sanctuary,
• the Sacred Way,
• ancient treasuries and monuments,
• and the Archaeological Museum of Delphi.

The museum contains many original sculptures and artifacts discovered at the site, including the famous Charioteer of Delphi statue. Many tourists combine the archaeological site and museum visit in one day.

Tours, Prices, and How to Reach Delphi

Delphi is located approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Athens. Most visitors arrive by organized day tour, rental car, or intercity bus. The drive from Athens usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours through mountain landscapes and small Greek villages.

Guided excursions from Athens are extremely popular and typically cost between €60 and €120 depending on transportation, guide services, and included meals. Entrance tickets to the archaeological site and museum generally cost €20 for adults.

Because of the mountain location, spring and autumn are considered the best times to visit, while summer afternoons can become very hot.
