Balos Lagoon is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of Crete, located on the northwestern coast of the island, near the Gramvousa Peninsula, about 55 kilometers from Chania. Famous for its turquoise waters, white-pink sand, and shallow lagoon, Balos is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Balos is a lagoon and beach combination, formed between the rugged Gramvousa Peninsula and Cape Tigani. The shallow lagoon has striking shades of blue and green, while its sand often appears light pink due to crushed seashells. The scenery is framed by steep hills and rocky cliffs, creating one of the most photogenic landscapes in the Mediterranean.

Behind the lagoon, salt-tolerant plants grow among sand dunes, and small coves offer quieter spots away from the main area. Across the water, visitors can see Imeri Gramvousa Island, which is home to an old Venetian fortress and can be reached by boat.

There are three main ways to reach Balos Lagoon:

  You can drive from Kissamos (about 15 km) along a rough dirt road leading to a parking area above the lagoon. The last part of the drive can be bumpy and slow, but the views are stunning. From the parking area, there is a 15–20 minute walk down a rocky path to reach the beach. The return walk uphill can be tiring in the heat, so bring water and good shoes.
• 乘船：
  The easiest way for many visitors is to take a boat excursion from the port of Kissamos. The trip usually includes a stop at Gramvousa Island before reaching Balos. The cruise lasts about 1 hour and offers magnificent coastal views.
• By tour:
  Many travel agencies organize day trips to Balos, including transport from Chania or Rethymno, making it convenient for those without a car.

The lagoon is famous for its warm, shallow waters, which are perfect for swimming.

• In summer (June–September), the water temperature is around 25–27 °C, ideal for families and non-swimmers.
• The outer side of the lagoon, facing the open sea, is deeper and slightly cooler, with small waves on windy days.

Because of its shallow depth, the water warms quickly under the sun, and the lagoon’s soft sandy bottom gives the sea its incredible turquoise color.

Access to Balos Lagoon is free, but there is a small environmental fee (about €1 per person) collected at the entrance to the Gramvousa Peninsula.

Facilities are minimal:

• A small canteen operates near the beach during summer months.
• Umbrellas and sunbeds are available in limited numbers for rent.
• No toilets or showers are located directly on the beach, so visitors should plan accordingly.

If visiting by car, bring plenty of water, food, and sun protection, as there are no shops or shade along the path.

Safety and Environmental Notes

Balos is part of a protected Natura 2000 area, home to rare plants and animals, including sea turtles and monk seals. Visitors are asked not to remove sand or shells and to take all trash back with them.

During summer, the lagoon can get very crowded in the middle of the day, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
