The Frauenkirche — the Church of Our Lady — is the emblem of Dresden and one of the most moving buildings in Germany, a great Baroque church whose vast stone dome once more crowns the skyline of the old town. Built between 1726 and 1743 to the daring design of the city architect George Bähr, it was famous for its “Stone Bell,” a self-supporting sandstone dome nearly a hundred metres high and among the boldest engineering feats of its age. The church was destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden in February 1945 and lay as a mountain of rubble for half a century, a deliberate reminder of the horror of war. Rebuilt between 1994 and 2005 from the original plans and thousands of its own salvaged stones, funded by donations from all over the world, it stands today as a powerful symbol of peace and reconciliation.

From outside, the great dome is the wonder — and the church’s history is written in its very walls, where the darker, fire-blackened original stones set among the pale new sandstone map out exactly which pieces survived the destruction. The interior comes as a surprise: a light, joyful Baroque space rising in tiers of galleries in soft pastel tones, centred on the reconstructed altar and the painted cupola overhead. High on top of the dome sits the golden orb and cross, a gift crafted in Britain by a silversmith whose father had flown in the raids on Dresden — a detail that captures the church’s message of reconciliation. For one of the finest views in the city, climb up into the dome (a lift takes you part of the way, then a gently spiralling ramp), which looks out over the Neumarkt, the Elbe and the Baroque rooftops of the old town.

The Frauenkirche stands on the Neumarkt square in the heart of Dresden’s rebuilt Baroque old town, only a few minutes’ walk from the Zwinger, the Royal Palace and the Brühl Terrace above the Elbe. Dresden is well served by fast trains from Berlin, Leipzig and Prague; from the main station it is about a twenty-minute walk or a short tram ride, with the nearest stops at Altmarkt and Pirnaischer Platz. Entry to the church is free outside of services and events, though visitors are asked to respect its use as a place of worship; a separate ticket is needed to climb the dome, and it is worth booking a slot at busy times. It combines easily with the other sights of the old town, and if you can, return after dark, when the floodlit dome is at its most beautiful.
