Ponte Vecchio is the oldest and most renowned bridge in Florence. The first bridge at this site across the Arno River was constructed during the Roman period, while the current structure dates to 1345.

The bridge is more than a crossing point: it has functioned for centuries as a marketplace. Situated in the historic center of Florence, it connects Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti on opposite banks of the river. The structure is notable for its distinctive design, with rows of small shops and additional buildings constructed on top of the bridge itself.

During the Middle Ages, the bridge was occupied mainly by butchers, who kept their stalls there. In later centuries, these were replaced by jewelers and goldsmiths, trades that continue to characterize the bridge today.

Running above the shops, beneath the roofline of the bridge, is the Vasari Corridor — a closed passageway built in the 16th century to connect the two palaces. It allowed the rulers of Florence to move privately between their residences without descending to the street.

Visiting Ponte Vecchio is free of charge, and it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks of Florence.
