The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) is a monumental staircase in Rome, Italy, and one of the city’s most popular landmarks. The staircase consists of 138 steps and connects Piazza di Spagna at its base with the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. It is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists, as well as a common starting point for walking tours of the city.

The Spanish Steps are located in the heart of Rome, a short walk from Via del Corso, one of the city’s main shopping streets. At the base lies Piazza di Spagna, while at the top the staircase reaches Pincio Hill and the church of Trinità dei Monti. The closest metro station is “Spagna,” located near the square.
历史
Construction of the staircase was completed in 1726. The project was initiated by the French, who were patrons of the Trinità dei Monti church and sought to connect the church with the square below. Prolonged negotiations with the Roman authorities delayed the project, largely due to disagreements about placing a statue of the French king at the top of the steps. The idea of the statue was eventually abandoned, clearing the way for the staircase to be built.

The staircase is built of travertine stone and is relatively restrained in terms of decorative elements, with few sculptures or embellishments. Its charm lies in its harmonious integration with the surrounding buildings and the prominent presence of the Trinità dei Monti church above. The steps often attract large crowds both during the day and in the evening.
At the base of the staircase stands the Fontana della Barcaccia, a Baroque fountain designed by Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Together with the steps and the square, it forms one of the most iconic ensembles in central Rome.

The Spanish Steps are open to the public free of charge. Sitting on the steps was once a tradition for many visitors, though recent regulations now prohibit eating or loitering on them to preserve the monument. The site remains one of the most photographed and visited places in Rome.
