Monterosso Beach is the principal seaside area of Monterosso al Mare, the westernmost town of the Cinque Terre in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. Located along the Ligurian Sea, it is the largest and most traditionally “resort-like” beach within the Cinque Terre. The coastline is divided into two main sections: the beach of the historic center (Centro Storico) and the larger Fegina Beach, situated near the railway station.

Monterosso al Mare lies approximately 90 km southeast of Genoa and can be reached primarily by train, which is the most convenient means of transport within the Cinque Terre. The Monterosso railway station is located directly adjacent to Fegina Beach, providing immediate access to the shoreline. Regional trains connect Monterosso with La Spezia, Levanto, Genoa, and other coastal towns. Road access is limited due to the mountainous terrain and restricted traffic regulations typical of the Cinque Terre area. Parking spaces are available but limited, especially during peak season. Boat services also connect Monterosso with other villages of the Cinque Terre during the warmer months.

Beach Characteristics

Unlike many beaches along the Italian Riviera, Monterosso Beach is composed primarily of sand mixed with fine gravel, making it one of the few relatively sandy beaches in the Cinque Terre. The seabed slopes gradually, and the water is typically clear, with colors ranging from blue to turquoise depending on weather conditions.

Fegina Beach is known for its long rows of orange and green umbrellas belonging to private beach establishments, while the historic center beach is smaller and more irregular in shape.

Access to the public sections of Monterosso Beach (spiaggia libera) is free of charge. However, a significant portion of Fegina Beach is occupied by private concessions where visitors may rent sun loungers and umbrellas for a daily fee, which varies depending on the season and location.

Facilities commonly include showers, changing cabins, restaurants, cafés, and water sports services. Lifeguards are typically present during the main summer months.
