Trolltunga, meaning “the Troll’s Tongue,” is a horizontal sliver of rock that juts out high above Lake Ringedalsvatnet near the town of Odda, in the Hardangerfjord region of western Norway, at the western edge of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Most hikers use Odda or the nearby village of Tyssedal as their base. Odda lies roughly two and a half to three hours by road from Bergen and about five hours from Oslo, and can be reached by a combination of train and bus for those without a car. The trail starts from one of three car parks above Tyssedal: P2 Skjeggedal is the main trailhead, while the higher P3 Mågelitopp shortens the route but requires advance booking. Shuttle buses link Odda, P1 Tyssedal, P2, and P3.

What Makes Trolltunga Famous

The rock formation and the valley below were carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, leaving a thin shelf of stone suspended around 700 metres above the lake. It has become one of Norway’s most photographed natural landmarks, with visitor numbers climbing from just a few hundred a year in 2010 to roughly 80,000 today. The reward at the end is the chance to step out onto the ledge for an unforgettable photograph against the fjord scenery, though in peak season this can mean a queue of half an hour or more between noon and mid-afternoon.

The trail itself is free, but the parking is not: a same-day ticket at P2 Skjeggedal costs around 330 NOK, with an additional road toll of about 220 NOK on the narrow road up from P1, and P3 must be reserved in advance. The hike is long and strenuous, classified as “very demanding,” covering roughly 20 to 28 kilometres round trip depending on the starting car park, with about 800 metres of ascent and a typical walking time of 8 to 12 hours. The safe season runs from around mid-June to mid-September, when the trail is snow-free; outside this window a local guide is strongly recommended or required. Hikers should start early, wear proper boots, carry food, water, and warm layers, and always check the mountain weather forecast before setting out.
