Vøringsfossen plunges into the head of the steep Måbødalen valley near the village of Eidfjord, at the western edge of the Hardangervidda plateau in Vestland county, in the Hardangerfjord region of western Norway. It sits just about one kilometre off Route 7 (Rv7), the Norwegian Scenic Route across Hardangervidda. By car it is roughly a 20- to 25-minute drive (about 20 km) up the valley from Eidfjord, around 173 kilometres or three hours from Bergen via Voss and the Hardanger Bridge, and just over an hour from Geilo coming from the Oslo direction across the mountain plateau. Visitors without a car can join seasonal bus tours from Eidfjord, which run up to the viewpoints and allow around an hour at the falls.

What Makes Vøringsfossen Famous

Vøringsfossen is often described as the best-known waterfall in Norway, with a total drop of 182 metres (a vertical main plunge of about 145 metres) into the rugged Måbødalen below. Its fame has grown further since 2020, when a striking stepped footbridge designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk opened across the gorge: it has 99 steps and a 47-metre span, linking a network of viewing platforms and paths. Together with the historic Fossli Hotel perched above the falls, where the composer Edvard Grieg was once a regular guest, these viewpoints let visitors take in the waterfall and the dramatic valley from several angles.

The waterfall is a natural attraction and free to visit, with parking and facilities available at Fossli and at Fossatromma right beside Route 7. These areas are generally open from around the start of April to the end of October, though snow and ice can shorten the season, and the viewing platforms, step bridge, and parts of the trail system are closed in winter for safety. A relaxed walk around the viewpoints takes roughly half an hour to an hour and a half. Because the site lies at around 700 metres above sea level, the weather can turn quickly, so warm, windproof, and waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes with good grip are recommended even in summer, as the paths can be slippery near the spray.
