挪威文努福森

Vinnufossen (also known as Vinnufallet or Vinnu Waterfall) is one of the tallest and most remarkable waterfalls in Europe. It is located in Sunndal Municipality, Møre og Romsdal county, in western Norway, just east of the small village of Sunndalsøra in the scenic Sunndalen valley.

Location and Setting

Vinnufossen lies in the rugged landscape of Fjord Norway, surrounded by steep mountains and deep valleys. The waterfall is part of the Vinnu River, which flows down from the Vinnufonna glacier on Vinnufjellet Mountain. The water eventually joins the Driva River near the village of Hoelsand.

Height and Features

Vinnufossen is famous for its extraordinary height, with a total drop measured at around 845–865 meters (2,772–2,838 feet), which places it among the tallest waterfalls in the world and often the tallest in Europe depending on the ranking system used.
It is a tiered horsetail waterfall, meaning the water stays in contact with the rock surface as it cascades down in a series of ribbons and drops. The waterfall spreads wider near the base as it meets the forested valley floor.

Reaching Vinnufossen by car is relatively easy for travelers exploring western Norway:

• From Sunndalsøra, the waterfall is visible and accessible by driving about 5–6 kilometers east along the Riksvei 70 (RV70). There are parking spots near the roadside and at a rest area called Holskeiet, where visitors often stop to view the falls.
• The region is reachable by car from Trondheim (north) in roughly 2.5–3 hours and from Oslo (south) in about 6 hours via the E6 highway and connecting roads.

Visiting and Hiking

At the roadside rest area, visitors can enjoy impressive views of Vinnufossen without a long hike. There is also a hiking route and a partially completed stone staircase (Vinnu stone stairs) that leads up the side of the valley, offering closer viewpoints and panoramic scenery of the waterfall and surrounding landscape. The hike to the most developed viewpoints can take around 30–60 minutes and is best suited for those with moderate fitness.

The waterfall is most spectacular in late spring and early summer (May to July), when snow melting from the glacier increases the water flow. However, Vinnufossen remains an impressive sight throughout the warmer months.
