布拉格圣维特大教堂

圣维特大教堂 is located in the center of Prague, in the city fortress “Prague Castle”. It is made in the Gothic style, which is reminiscent of such famous European cathedrals as Notre Dame de Paris and Stefansdom. It is an active cathedral; the residence of the Archbishop of Prague is located here, and various religious services are held.

The cathedral is beautiful and unusual in its own way. The beauty of the Cathedral of St. Vitus is not spoiled even by the forests of restorers, who periodically cover parts of its façade. Good photographs of the cathedral can be taken from the square in front of its central entrance, as well as from the Vltava embankment and Charles Bridge. From there you can clearly see the entire panorama of Prague Castle.

The area on which the cathedral is located is quite small and cramped. There are always a lot of tourists here, since most city tours start from Prague Castle.

Previously, you could enter the cathedral for free; now, to get to the territory of Prague Castle and the Cathedral, you need to buy a comprehensive ticket (it cost from 18 euro in 2024). To buy a ticket at the box office, you have to wait in a long line of tourists, but now an electronic entrance ticket (on your phone, no need to print) can be purchased in advance.

Inside the cathedral is beautifully decorated with colored stained glass windows, sculptures, reliefs and stucco moldings. Its ribbed vaults reach a height of more than 33 meters. The height of the highest point of the cathedral, its large southern tower, is 96.5 meters. The height of the two slightly smaller twin towers is 82 meters.

The Cathedral of St. Vitus was built over 600 years. The first stone of the building was laid in 1344, and it acquired its final appearance only in 1929. Over its long history, the cathedral has seen the coronations of Czech kings, the state treasury of the Czech Republic was kept here, and the great rulers of the country were buried here.

You can get to St. Vitus Cathedral from the center of Prague on foot (although you will have to walk uphill) or by tram number 22.
