The Slovak city of Poprad is often seen as a transit hub before heading into the High Tatras, but the city itself has several attractions worth exploring. It combines a compact historical center, relaxing green spaces, and modern leisure facilities, making it a pleasant stop for tourists.

Historical Center

The heart of Poprad is the pedestrian zone known as Namestie Svätého Egídia (St. Egidius Square). Here you’ll find:

• The Church of St. Egidius, a medieval Gothic church that gave the square its name.
• The Evangelical Church, a symbol of Poprad’s Protestant history.

The square is small but charming: tree-lined with benches, outdoor cafés, and bicycle paths. Cars are not allowed in the center, which makes it peaceful and ideal for strolling. There are no large malls in the historic center—the only major store here is a two-story H&M. For shopping, the nearest mall is MAX Poprad, located about a 15–20 minute walk away.

Getting to the Center

From the Poprad railway and bus stations, the city center can be reached in just 7–8 minutes on foot. A pedestrian path leads from the station toward the small Poprad River, and after crossing the bridge, you’ll find yourself in the main square.

If you have time to spare, consider extending your walk:

• 斯皮什斯卡索博塔 – about a 15–20 minute walk from central Poprad. Once an independent town, it now forms a historical suburb of Poprad with a well-preserved medieval square.

Accommodation in Poprad

Many travelers prefer staying in Poprad rather than in the High Tatras resorts, as hotel prices are significantly lower. The Tatran Electric Railway (TEŽ) runs regularly between Poprad and resort towns like Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso, making mountain trips convenient.

Accommodation options include:

• Larger hotels such as Hotel Tatra and Hotel Poprad in the city center.
• Smaller guesthouses like Penzión Jakub, located near the train station and supermarket Billa. For around €80 per night (2024 prices), you can get a room with half-board included. Rooms are uniquely decorated, though the cheapest ones can be quite small.
