Market Square (Rynek Główny) is the main square of Krakow and the heart of the city. Almost all tourist routes pass through here, so visitors will inevitably find themselves in the square.

The square is perfectly square in shape, measuring about 200 by 200 meters. It was originally designed in 1257, though it has undergone numerous changes over the centuries. Today, the square no longer functions as a traditional market. In the center stands the Cloth Hall, which now houses rows of souvenir shops. Nearby is the Town Hall Tower, the only remaining part of the original Town Hall, which was demolished long ago. If you buy souvenirs here, bargaining is common, and vendors may lower the price.

At one corner of the square stands St. Mary’s Church, the main cathedral of Krakow, while other notable buildings include the Church of St. Wojciech, the monument to Adam Mickiewicz, and the Zbaraski Palace.

In summer, the square comes alive with flowers, outdoor cafés, souvenir stalls, living statues, and modern art installations. Near the Cloth Hall, old-fashioned horse-drawn carriages line up, offering rides to tourists at reasonable prices. The square also hosts concerts and performances; historically, even Pope John Paul II has appeared here.

The square is surrounded by restored medieval buildings, and it can get crowded. To take photos without people, it is best to visit early in the morning.

Among recommended excursions are the Underground Museum beneath the square, the Town Hall Tower, and the Palace under Krzysztofory. In 2024, a combined ticket for all three attractions cost about 23 euros. The Cloth Hall also features an art gallery displaying works by 19th-century Polish masters such as Matejko, Malczewski, and Helmonski, with a terrace offering panoramic views of the square.

Overall, Krakow’s Main Market Square is a charming place to stroll, enjoy a coffee or ice cream, and soak in the city atmosphere. Without visiting museums or galleries, a full walk around the square can take about 20–30 minutes.
