Wawel Cathedral (Cathedral of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslas) is a historic Roman Catholic church located within the Royal Wawel Castle complex in Krakow, Poland. It is considered the spiritual heart of the Catholic Church in Poland and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Krakow. The cathedral is famously associated with Pope John Paul II, who served here as archbishop before his papacy.

Wawel Cathedral has been the site of coronations, royal weddings, and funerals for centuries. Seventeen Polish kings, prominent political leaders, and notable cultural figures are buried here, including Adam Mickiewicz, as well as President Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, who died in the 2010 Smolensk plane crash.

The cathedral was constructed in the mid-14th century, replacing two older churches: the Church of Saint Wenceslas and the Church of Saint Stanislav Szczepanovsky. To honor both predecessors, the new cathedral was dedicated to both saints. It was officially opened in 1364, with King Casimir the Great attending the inauguration.

During the period when Krakow was the capital of the Kingdom of Poland, the cathedral became the principal religious and political center of the country. Polish monarchs were crowned here, and important ceremonies of state were conducted within its walls. The cathedral dungeon houses the tombs of Polish kings.

Wawel Cathedral is primarily a three-nave Gothic basilica made of brick and limestone. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, resulting in a mix of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Notable architectural features include:

• Chapels along the perimeter, many of which contain royal burials. Among the most famous is the Sigismund Chapel, designed by Italian architect Bartolomeo Berrecci, considered a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture in Poland.
• Zygmunt Bell Tower, part of the castle’s fortifications, houses the Sigismund Bell, the largest bell in Poland.
• Numerous tombs, monuments, and intricate decorations reflecting centuries of Polish history.
