The Egyptian Bazaar, also known as the Spice Bazaar (Turkish: Mısır Çarşısı), is one of the most prominent bazaars in Istanbul, second in significance only to the Grand Bazaar. It is located in the Old City, within the Eminönü district of the European side of Istanbul, close to notable landmarks such as the New Mosque, the Galata Bridge, and the Eminönü pier, from which Bosphorus cruises depart.

Construction of the Egyptian Bazaar began in 1597 and was completed in 1664. The market acquired its name because, historically, the majority of spices and herbs sold there were imported from Egypt. Over the centuries, the market building suffered several fires but largely retained its original architectural appearance. Initially, the bazaar was connected to the New Mosque as a single complex, though a road now separates the two structures.

Architecture and Layout

The bazaar is designed in the shape of an “L” and is fully covered. It has several entrances, with the main gate opening onto Eminönü Square. The interior features a network of narrow aisles lined with stalls and shops, creating a vibrant marketplace atmosphere.

Goods and Services

Today, the Egyptian Bazaar hosts approximately 100 shops offering a variety of goods, including spices, herbs, teas, coffee, sweets, souvenirs, silver, jewelry, and ceramics. While the bazaar primarily caters to tourists and prices are generally higher than in other parts of Istanbul, the external trading area in front of the market often features lower prices.

The Egyptian Bazaar is popular not only for shopping but also for its lively atmosphere and opportunities for photography. Its proximity to other attractions in the Old City allows visitors to combine a market visit with sightseeing, including a walk across the nearby Galata Bridge to the New City.
