Sirkeci Railway Station (Turkish: Sirkeci Garı) is one of the most famous historical railway stations in Istanbul, located on the European side of the city, along the shore of the Golden Horn in the Sirkeci district. Its strategic position places it close to some of Istanbul’s most significant landmarks, including Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and the Galata Bridge.

The station not only served as a transport hub but also became a cultural and architectural landmark, symbolizing Istanbul’s connection to Europe.

Sirkeci Station was constructed during the late 19th century, a period when the Ottoman Empire was actively adopting European innovations and sought stronger ties with Western states.

• Construction and opening: Built between 1888 and 1890, the station officially opened in 1890.
• Demolition for tracks: To lay the railway lines leading to the station, part of the outer walls and even several pavilions of Topkapi Palace were demolished with the Sultan’s approval.
• Orient Express: Sirkeci became the eastern terminus of the legendary Orient Express, which ran from Paris to Istanbul. The station quickly became a gateway for European travelers arriving in the Ottoman capital.

The station is a prime example of Orientalism in architecture, a style blending Eastern and Western motifs that gained popularity in late 19th-century Europe. Key features include:

• A Byzantine-inspired marble façade with decorative details.
• Horseshoe-shaped arches reminiscent of Islamic architecture.
• Stained glass windows instead of plain glass, adding vibrant color.
• A grand entrance facing the Golden Horn Bay.

Inside, Sirkeci was considered modern for its time. It had gas heating, artificial lighting, and even an Orient Express restaurant, which became a popular meeting point for writers, journalists, and intellectuals.

Present Day

Despite renovations, the station has preserved much of its original appearance:

• The platforms still look much as they did more than 100 years ago.
• The Orient Express Café continues to operate (daily from 12:00 to 23:00).
• A small railway museum functions on site, displaying the history of Istanbul’s railways.

Modern Role

Sirkeci remains in service today, with commuter trains and regional connections heading westward. After being closed for renovations for several years, the station reopened on 26 February 2024.

Looking ahead, Sirkeci is set to play a major role in Istanbul’s transport network through the Marmaray project—an underground rail tunnel beneath the Bosphorus that connects the European and Asian sides of the city. A new underground station is under construction beneath the historic building, ensuring that Sirkeci will remain both a functional hub and a cultural landmark.
