Antalya is the capital of Turkey's Mediterranean coast and the gateway to the "Turkish Riviera", a long stretch of turquoise sea, sandy and pebbled beaches and pine-clad mountains. It combines a charming, atmospheric old town of Ottoman houses above a picturesque harbour with modern beach resorts and some of the finest ancient ruins in the region. Blessed with a warm climate and framed by the dramatic Taurus Mountains, it is one of the world's most popular holiday destinations, offering history, sun and sea at excellent value. Turkish is the language, English is common in tourist areas, and the wider coast is dotted with resort towns like Side, Belek and Kemer.

Antalya Airport (AYT) is one of Turkey's busiest, handling huge numbers of holiday charters and international flights, and lies about 13 km from the centre. Within the city, a tram and buses connect the old town, beaches and airport, while the resorts along the coast are reached by frequent buses (dolmus) and transfers. A car helps for exploring the ancient sites and waterfalls inland, and boat trips run from the old harbour along the coast.

Antalya is very affordable for Western visitors, though the Turkish lira has seen high inflation, so lira prices change quickly — it is easiest to gauge costs in euros. Roughly, a mid-range hotel runs about 40-90 EUR per night, with all-inclusive resort packages often excellent value, and budget rooms much less. A casual meal is around 6-14 EUR, a Turkish tea barely 1 EUR and a coffee 2-3 EUR. Entry to ancient sites and museums typically costs 10-20 EUR.
