The Urnes Stave Church is located in the village of Ornes on the eastern shore of the Lustrafjord, a branch of the larger Sognefjord. The church stands in a remote rural landscape in western Norway, approximately 270 km northwest of Oslo. It was built around 1130 and is considered the oldest surviving stave church in Norway, representing a key example of medieval wooden architecture.

Urnes Stave Church is particularly famous for its ornamental wood carvings, which combine traditional Viking art with early Christian symbolism. The most notable feature is the richly decorated north portal, where intertwined animal figures form a complex pattern known as the “Urnes style”, which became an important artistic tradition in Scandinavia. Because of its unique architectural and artistic significance, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Visiting Urnes Stave Church

The church is relatively small but highly detailed, with a wooden structure supported by vertical staves and an interior featuring carved columns and simple medieval furnishings. The site also includes surrounding historical elements such as ancient burial grounds and remains of earlier churches, indicating that the location has been used as a religious site for centuries.

Visitors can reach Urnes by traveling to the village of Solvorn, which is connected by road to nearby towns such as Sogndal. From Solvorn, a short ferry crossing (about 15 minutes) takes visitors across the fjord to Ornes. From the ferry landing, the church is located about 2 km uphill, accessible by foot or car. The journey itself offers scenic views of fjords and mountains typical of western Norway.

Entrance to the church requires a ticket, typically costing around €10–€12 for adults, and the site is open mainly during the tourist season (May to September). A visit usually takes 30–60 minutes, as the church is compact but rich in historical detail. Guided tours are often available and provide additional insight into the symbolism and construction techniques.
